History Repeating Itself? Trust But Verify

90’s Concerns

It’s the Summer of 1994, an assault weapons ban had been passed in the House of Representatives in May, and the Senate was going through the motions of passage of the bill. Gun show attendance was at an all time high, and dealers of firearms and military equipment had record sales.

Keep in mind, we had seen a number of things happen, prior to the threat of the assault weapon ban, and that had many on edge. Bush’s Import “Assault Weapon” Ban, Ruby Ridge, Waco, and a lot of “New World Order” talk. The election of Bill “I didn’t inhale” Clinton, just appeared to be the perfect set up for a tyranny to take hold.

One of the things you could buy at many gun shows was info. The internet was not a “Thing”, and to get info, pertaining to what you needed to know, you either bought books or videos. A video that was making it’s rounds, apparently for about a year, was “America In Peril” by “Mark from Michigan”.

Mark Koernke

I had heard about it from a Friend, and bought a copy at the local gun show, when I saw it for sale. WOW, so much info I didn’t know! So many things going on that I was unaware of! The Feds are training, arming and deputizing street gangs! “Mark from Michigan” is at the top of their arrest list! Probably has something to do with being a Mil Intel Analyst, Counter Intel Coordinator, and Commander of two (2nd and 3rd) OpFor Brigades at the time of the video, huh?

Koernke was well spoken, and appeared to know what he was talking about. I can tell you that my Friends and I thought things were bad before we watched that video, but DAMN, we better get on the stick, concerning our firearms and gear purchases, because the gun confiscations are coming in a few months…….according to Mark, and he would know….right?

As I said in the beginning of the video above, many of Koernke’s assertions are exaggerations, if not total fabrications. Although I know a lot of info about Koernke, concerning his beliefs (hearing some of it from his own mouth a few years back), I’ll just point out that his military background (Just adding up the years and timeline, let alone his claimed “Duty Positions”), obviously isn’t what he claims (if anyone can prove I am wrong with a DD-214, by all means, do so, and I’ll retract my statement), and from the article I linked below, he obviously has delusions about who and what he knows.

Here’s a link to a story that gives some insight from people that knew him, growing up and into adulthood and from the military (He was in the 70th Division [Training] US Army Reserve, it remained in Detroit until 1968, when it was moved to Livonia, Mich. The 70th Division [Training] was formally inactivated in Michigan on 15 Nov. 1996.). When you read the linked story above, Koernke kind of reminds you of this guy, but his prison time was for something different. Although he was arrested a few times previously, his 7 year sentence was because he panicked, and ran from the cops after they tried to pull him over as a bank robbery suspect. I’m not gonna judge his actions, because he had his kids in the car, and remember, he “Believes” he was at the top of an arrest list.

Actual Actions Against Us At That Time

Well, the “1994 Assault Weapon Ban” went into effect after “America In Peril”, and it lasted for 10 years. There was no house to house gun confiscation by street gangs, or anybody else for that matter. About the only good thing to come out of the “AWB’94”, was that firearms manufacturers started concentrating on designing and making more compact pistols, due to a 10 round mag restriction. Another thing that happened, was many of us found an appreciation for cheap prices on many firearms accessories. A $20 Glock 21 thirteen round mag was selling for $80 during the ban.

Recent History

I watched a video recently, where some guys were talking about the present situation, concerning our Nation’s proximity to WWIII, tyranny in the U.S., the “Constitutional Militia” and what they’ll do when it “Hits the fan”. The oldest guy in this discussion was in his early forties, and the other two were too young to remember anything from the 90’s, and it showed.

Even the older guy was obviously clueless, concerning any of the gun control and government overreach issues we dealt with during the early to mid 90’s. I heard them mention a few sources that they used to get the info, and over half were total clickbait BS artists, that are easily fact checked.

Concerning the topics of their conversation, yes, I believe we are closer to a true WWIII than we have ever been, especially from a nuclear war aspect. U.S. based tyranny is alive and well, due to the edicts of the Resident, as well as many States and the Administration ignoring recent SCOTUS judgements that enforce the Constitution and empower the People of the United States.

As to the “Constitutional Militia”…. really? You realize, legally speaking, if you call yourself a “Constitutional Militia” and follow the rules for that, set forth in the “1903 Dick Act” (among others), you are subject to the authority of the Governor of your State. I don’t know about you, but there is no way I’d subject myself to the orders and authority of my State’s Governor.

Actions You Can Take When It “Hits The Fan”

Form yourself a Survivalist Group. It would be organized for community sustainment and defense, and would incorporate everyone involved, into positions within the group. Those involved in the patrol elements of the defensive side of the group, would be organized along the lines of Infantry Fire Teams (4 man) or Long Range Surveillance (LRS) Teams (6 man), if you are fortunate enough to have enough personnel for that.

There are two main reasons for organizing them this way. First, if you are serious about patrolling, having a group that is organized down to the Buddy Team (2 man) level is important, even if it’s just for the fire and maneuver portion of a violent contact with bad guys.

Second, if your group becomes part of a larger defensive group or Militia, there is a good possibility their defensive section will be organized in a similar fashion, since there are some hard won lessons that have already been learned and implemented by the military, and “Reinventing the wheel”, is just stupid.

Do your organizing through “Meat Space” encounters, not on the internet. Organize with TRUSTED Family and Friends first. Once that’s established, start to have those members bring others in that are TRUSTED Friends and Family.

The Blessing/Curse Of The Internet

From an info aspect, comparing the situation today to 30 years ago, is no comparison. We have info at our fingertips, but the problem is, like the video from earlier, the level of dis-info and online “Militia Generals” that are legends in their own minds are at an all time high.

There are so many Youtube personalities that put up clickbait titles to get hits, it’s overwhelming. Regardless of the excuse used by the personality, there is no reason to BS the perspective watcher, by putting up a title that isn’t honest. Like Koernke’s claimed list of military accomplishments, that appears to be less than honest, why should you trust info from clickbait youtubers, who are just trying to make a buck from your click on their video.

Find information providers that are clear in the titles of their videos, and give info in plain terms. As an example, Southern Prepper 1 has been supplying good info for years, and put out some seriously important info with his “Boots on the Ground” videos.

There are a number of guys like him out there, just do some looking, but always try to verify the info through another source. The above info equally applies to bloggers and podcasts. Back then, we didn’t know that a lot of the info that Koernke, and a few others like him, were putting out was BS, but today, you have the resources to find that out, where we did not. You might say, “But JC, some of what he said was true.”, and that is true. The best charlatans include a modicum of truth to make the rest of the lies more believable.

I know how pissed a number of us were, when we found out years later that Koernke was BS’n us with a lot of that video’s info. I’d not only like to save you from having to find something like that out later, but help you save the money you’d probably otherwise spend, because you think it’s the last minute, and you feel like you really have “No choice”.

  1. Thanks for the (reminder) heads up…..I had forgotten about this dude …..thanks for taking the time….

    • A lot of people have. He’s obviously not the only one, but from my own personal experience, he was the stand out in the BS Department. He did a number of videos throughout the 90’s, all reiterating some of the same info, but with none of his “It’s gonna happen in a couple weeks” incidents coming true.

  2. In reference to the comment above about: “…Feds arming and training street gangs”, they do not have to. FEDGOV has the power through the infamous “Executive Order” to cross-designate state and local LEOS as Deputy US Marshals, putting them under authority umbrella of DOJ. It is a very similar concept to federalizing NG units, as Ike did during the 50’s in Little Rock, AR to desegregate public schools at bayonet point.
If you fast-forward to the last ten years, corrupt, self-serving Sheriffs, Police Chiefs and other Stasi wannabes took full advantage of Mr. Obama’s “gifts” of MRAPS, HUMVEES and other toys to: “…combat Tea Party terrorists”(actual statement by a Spokane County Deputy Sheriff at an equipment exhibition in 2015). Plan accordingly. Bleib ubrig.

    • The point was that people, like him, were disseminating this garbage to those unsure of what was going on, not what the Feds can or cannot do, whether “legal”, “legitimate” or Constitutional. Whether he was doing it to start a Revolution/Restoration, or, as I believe, to try and impress people with “Secret” info only he knew (the people that knew him growing up, tell a story that makes this more likely), it doesn’t matter, he lied about a lot, starting with his background.

      • The sad thing is, most of these fraudsters can’t be arrested since the don’t play dress-up in uniforms and ribbons. We have 2 of them in my small town claiming to be VN LRRP and SOG operators. Total BS artists.
I was on Oki 50 yrs ago, getting ready to ship out for Subic Bay and the coast of VN with BLT 1/9, spent a lot of time later with SFG/UDT/SEAL instructors and have developed a fine nose for these con artists, they can’t answer the simplest questions about gear or radios carried, let alone who they served under.
Would love to see every one of them arrested under the Stolen Valor Act.

  4. Dodge,

Also remember that the militia movement was an extension (speaking time-wise), and a continuation of, the Survivalist movement which began late in the Carter years.

The Feds were terrified of how the Militia movement sprang up so quickly after Weaver and Waco. It scared them as much when the movement faded away after OKC, because then they had only their snitches to keep track of, a dog chasing its tail.

But then, the OKC operation did its job too. The “event”, had several aims . One was to get a new Anti-Terrorism bill passed. (They didn’t have the slick name “Patriot Act” thunk up yet.) Another was to link the Militia movement with domestic terrorism through “the event” at OKC.

Martin Keating wrote a novel, first published in 1989. The book was entitled, Final Jihad. In his fictional story, a federal building gets blown up in OKC, by a militia terrorist named McVay. Keating even got the last name right. What a coinkidink!
That Martin Keating… what a card! It is even more Ironic that the Governor of Oklahoma, at the time of “the event” was none other that Frank Keating, Martin’s brother! What a coinkidink!

The Militia basically disbanded because the nervous/conscientious effect “the event” had on them mandated it. You’re not one of them Terrorists, are you? Propaganda works. If you are a sociopath/psychopath, it doesn’t matter the cost, as long as it works.

I’ll also mention how the Bundy Ranch stand off ended a few years ago. Remember when the Feds were trying to steal Bundy’s land and destroy his cattle? The Sheriff understood and I surmise that the Feds got it too, that there were tens of thousands of Patriots on their way to southern Nevada. That event could have been Lexington Green all over again.

I tell people, organize a local neighborhood defense association. As SMB advised, keep it small, keep it local, keep it (para)military. That kind of organization will draw much less ire than an armed band, at large, under no one’s authority.

Otherwise, the ONLY lawful way to assemble and armed band is under the authority of your local Sheriff.

    Do you trust your sheriff?

You know, where I live, the Sheriff is obligated to enforce all State laws. The Sheriff may be a local elected official, but remember, your County is a political sub-division of your State, and thus, during an “insurrection”, under the complete military authority ofThe Governor.

    Be well and God bless,
    LB

  5. Mark from Michigan, wow, what a trip down memory lane. I didn’t buy his line (it wasn’t consistent), but I remember the level of concern around govt over reach at Waco & Ruby Ridge, and the many questions surrounding the Clintons.

It FEELS worse now, crazy, chaotic, closing in from all sides — but cooler heads prevailed at Bundy Ranch, where CW2 could have had its Ft. Sumter moment. We haven’t had a Waco, but we did have Antifa/BLM with ‘firey but peaceful’ urban renewal. And of course, we suffered the last 3 years augmented and promoted by a media gone stark raving mad. Even as social media is crawling with official-narrative-repeating trolls.

If a person is attentive, it’s pretty clear that a major percentage of the modern angst is generated by media lies, bluffs, fakery, and tone deafness. And they either totally believe it or don’t care that “we know”. This cognitive dissonance makes us anxious and volatile. The WH resident is certainly not running the show. Whomever is at the helm is as mind numbed as that gal who made critical decisions for Bud Lite.

Southern Prepper 1 seems okay, as does Bracken & MacGregor. Martin Armstrong analyzes economic trends and projects outcomes (which are ugly). Cliff High toys with language and linguistic variance, and forecasts from that. Each has biases, although they seem conscious of their limitations. But anyone who has a “secret source” is probably just a conduit for another layer of b.s.

Do we need another Mark from Michigan about now? Someone who seems to know what is really happening? A figurehead to rally around? Even if we got one, I’ve become so cynical I wouldn’t believe him anyway.

  6. For every 100 Mark from Michigan’s that come and go, you occasionally get a Matt Bracken. Matt’s books and interviews from a decade ago seem like he had a crystal ball predicting events of today. God bless the prophets.

  7. We are living in, by orders of magnitude, the most concentrated propaganda environment ever created on planet Earth. As a reaction to this, the choosing of sides is well underway. We have truly separated into 1) statists and 2) supporters of the concept of limited government and natural rights. There is no reconciliation. We outnumber them by about 3 or 4 to 1, and the rabid and ideologically committed statists are a few percent at most, are easily identified and have come out. The zoomer college angries, millenials and 30-something childless females will shut up and go away when sporky starts and free shit stops; these will not be able to survive without subsidy and will be forced to either change their attitudes or starve. They are not a kinetic threat.

  8. Would you have info on how to pick someone out who is an infiltrator? I am not military so a lot of the jargon you use goes over my head. At one time I would have trusted a pastor maybe but not anymore. I know many groups now have moles in them. I am very observant in watching behavior and any change in behavior as well as language used. But many things can cause a persons behavior to change. Thank you for the good info you share!

  9. Wow, talk about a blast from the past. Mark “The Janitor” Koernke fooled a lot folks. I was given his video after meeting a dude at a gun show, along with the “Waco: Rules of Engagement” video. Dude was running some kind of operation out of a house in Tucson distributing videos, books, and literature – and wanted no money for what he was giving away. He also tried to recruit me to join a “militia”, but I thought it was kind of hokey as they were all chiefs and no Indians, so to speak. Looking back, I believe he was probably a government agent provocateur. It was a few years later they were in the news as planning to blow up an Amtrak train or they did blow the rails – I forget which, but it turned out that there were only a couple true believers and the rest were all undercover cops or criminal informants.

Anyway, Mark from Michigan’s lecture was easy to believe for me, especially the criminal street gangs part, as I was living in town at the time and had watched my neighborhood go from working middle class to ghetto in just one year as HUD came in and bought up houses and the big apartment complexes went Section 8 and a low class criminal element immediately relocated and crime skyrocketed. We could never figure out why the cops were doing nothing to stop the criminals, either.

Then there was that chick who made the “Waco: Rules of Engagement”. She turned out to be sketchy and last I heard, she’d disappeared.

Build tribe. Like the man said, family and friends.

  10. Off topic question, if you were customizing/upgrading an M1A Socom today, which stock, rail, suppressor compatible flash hider or compensator would you use? I’ve read your posts about things you’ve done over the years and am curious what you’d do today since I am considering similar upgrades to my stock Socom. Thanks.

    • Smith Enterprises adapter and a Smith Vortex or something similar that takes the suppressor you want to use. I’ve had and used EBRs, because it’s hard to find folders/collapsibles that are robust and not clunky. I had to make my Frankenstock folder out of a BM-59 folding stock with synthetic M14 front end.
